Legal Information: You may be able to handle common public benefits issues on your own. Visit the Resource Center for information on getting an Ohio Works First (OWF) hardship extension, requesting a state hearing when you disagree with a Job and Family Services decision, and accessing links to apply for Ohio Works First, Unemployment Benefits, SNAP/Food Assistance, and more. 


Advice and Representation: You may wish to contact SEOLS if you have questions regarding a public benefits program or have experienced any of the following problems with your benefits or benefits application: 

  • You have applied for benefits and have been denied 
  • Your benefits have been reduced and you disagree with the agency’s decision 
  • You have been sanctioned by an agency 
  • You have been told you have an overpayment 
  • Your application processing has been delayed 
  • You won your administrative hearing but have not yet received your benefits 
  • You need help with a hospital bill you cannot afford or are being threatened or sued because of a medical debt 

Important Things to Remember about Public Benefits: 

  • Pay close attention to any letters you receive from an agency in charge of your benefits. 
  • Respond to any deadlines on time. 
  • Keep careful records of all your phone calls, emails, and meetings with the agency in charge of your benefits. Include the time, date, and subject of any phone calls or office visits.  
  • Get a receipt for any papers you drop off at an agency office.
